Security Industry: Are You Ready for 2018?

By Mark Folmer, CPP, MSyI

The New Year will arguably bring with it a new set of threats and issues as well as those that we all know and love. To be ready, you will need to adjust your response to the old threats, and put on your problem-solving hat for the new threats.

To give you a heads-up, here are some big-picture topics you will absolutely need to keep on your radar.

Security Guard of the Future

Near and dear to my heart are security services. The environment and the resources are getting more complex. So the ways in which security guard services are deployed, managed, and optimized will continue to evolve in 2018.

The good news is that there are established tools and applications that will allow you to do more and do it better. Integrated technology solutions are the way to go.

Mobility

Mobile technology is readily available for harnessing. Actually, not using it will leave you behind forward-thinking competitors.

Whether it be for real-time reporting or incident tracking and analytics, mobile tech will be a must-use in 2018.

SaaS

Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) models have developed into refined tools you can take advantage of in your security program. So say good-bye to server maintenance.

With external security certifications available, you can be more flexible in your deployment. And data is now readily accessible from places where you could not get it before.

IoT

The pervasiveness of the Internet of Things (IoT) will affect your security program. Whether it be team members that are distracted by connected devices or a well-designed solution that optimizes onsite resources, there is no way to stick your head in the sand on this one.

Do keep in mind the vulnerabilities created by connected devices, so lock the backdoor!

Board-level Supervision

Some of the trends we are seeing for 2018 include the growing recognition of the vital role physical security plays in ensuring cybersecurity — and vice versa.

Getting in front of decision-makers will help you get to where you want to go. A bit of advice: Be ready with concrete, concise, and direct data!

Compliance

Tied closely to board and C-suite attention, compliance will grow in importance as will scrutiny. Since the new year will not bring a reduction in the number and complexity of regulations, that means you have to be even more attentive to detail.

Insider Threat

Threats come from all places, external and internal. To stay on top of the sources of threat, you almost have to keep your head and security program on a swivel. Keep in mind that the internal threat can also be inadvertent disclosure.
